My Everyday Equestrian Style: Summer Edition

Have you ever wondered how to take the staples of the equestrian life and style and incorporate it into your fashion when you are not riding? What are those key components that make up the ‘equestrienne’ that can also cross over to your personal style at events, parties and more? I am going to outline those staple items for me and how I use them for my unique style.

The Collared Shirt

The collared button down comes from tradition. Way back when horses were used for hunts by the aristocracy of Europe, they chose to wear a simple white collared button down with a coat. It is classic and timeless- thus why it is still used today and is known to be a staple article of clothing for riders across the world.

For my everyday style, while I don’t always choose the plain white collared shirt, I definitely wear a lot of collared button downs. Anywhere from blue, light purple and pink gingham to denim to plaid- button downs are a staple for my wardrobe.

I have two favorite ways to wear collared button downs: with a skirt or with a vest. Since we are talking summer style, I would be wearing my blue gingham button down tucked into a pink or Lily Pulitzer skirt.

But of course, if you choose to forego the skirt, jeans or shorts work, too. If you wear a fashionable belt, tuck that button down in! No belt? No worries, leave your shirt untucked for a chic, casual look.

Feel free to pair your gingham with a cardigan and a string of pearls for a more formal look.

If you’d rather have more modern jewelry, I also love Kendra Scott. Her pieces are current, stylish and can go with just about anything.

The Belt

We all know it is not a smart idea to ride without a belt. But that is no reason to not also make a fashion statement. I love belts because they are so practical, but can be uber stylish, as well. Plus, I can wear my belts on and off of the horse.

My faves are:

Hérmes

Ralph Lauren

Longchamp

Tory Burch

The Pearl Earring

Pearls are a statement of prep. Everyone who has ever been thought of as a prep has been seen in pearls. Jackie Kennedy, Lilly Pulitzer, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, etc. I tend to be found riding with simple gold, pearl studs. I would wear more- bracelets, necklaces- if I wasn’t worried about breaking them or losing them. So I just have to make up for it in my everyday style. I typically wear a string, or multiple strings, of pearls with a button down collared shirt, or a button down and sweater combo. Or anytime I wear stripes or polka dots or any sort of preppy sweater. But if it’s summer, I am usually wearing a button down, polo, blouse or light sweater.

All Things Vineyard Vines & Lilly Pulitzer

Lily Pulitzer has been a symbol of preppy summer style since John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy became the face of All American style. Vineyard Vines started out a mere 15 years ago, and has since grown wildly popular amongst the country. Now, the simple, clean cut whale logo is a symbol of iconic American style, while the bright, fun and beachy patterns of Lilly Pulitzer invoke the memory of the classy and fabulous Jackie Kennedy summering in Newport. Every day should feel this good, right?

Sperrys & Jack Rodgers

The ultimate boat shoes and the classiest sandals. These two come in many different styles and colors- meaning they go with everything!

The Scalloped Short/Skirt

Shorts & skirts are a must in the summer- we all know that. But the scalloped short/skirt adds the perfect touch of class and chic style. They can be dressed up or down for every summer occasion. I adore all things scallops- clothes & food alike. These are a staple item in every preps wardrobe.

Sunglasses

Now, you don't have to have Dior's, there are many great sunglasses out there. I am just currently obsessing over my DIORIFIC 1N Sunglasses. No matter the style you choose, it is important to protect your eyes- on and off the horse.

Happy Styling!
